Surely, there must be more to life than this

What’s waiting for you outside the office window?

Surely, there must be more to life than this? This can’t be it, can’t it? Surely this monotony of mundaneness must crack open to reveal something we yearn for? Nine to five. Nine to five. Nine to five. Nine to five. Nine to five. Breathe. Breathe. Nine to five. Nine to five. Nine to five. Nine to five. Nine to five. Breathe. Breathe. And oh! Sunday night slithers in with its shadows and shivers. Then back to nine to five again.

Staring out of the office window watching life sneak past. It’s a hamster wheel of existence. We rush to work. We rush home. We rush to work. We rush home. The wheel of life goes round and round but doesn’t go anywhere. We’re locked in the corporate cage, craning to catch a glimpse of the sun’s rays from between the meeting room bars.

We live each day for the weekend ahead. But the weekend brings no soothing sense of satisfaction. All joy must be crammed into two tiny days that seem shorter than all the rest. And housework, family visits, social occasions and chores fight for space too. How does it all fit together? It’s a sum that will never add up. It’s two minus three: it cannot be done. You will never find the solution because the odds are stacked against you. The deadlines are set too short. The goalposts are positioned too wide. The bar is put up too high. The request is bigger than should be asked of you. Can’t you see it’s not your fault that you can’t juggle everything? Stop blaming yourself. The odds are stacked against you.

But that doesn’t mean you have to keep playing someone else’s Russian Roulette with your life. Every day just surviving. Not knowing if tomorrow will bring the bullet that finally breaks you apart. You don’t owe them that. Your life is not theirs to play with. Take control of the game.

Flash forward. Is this who you want to be in decades to come? Working to live but never really living. No? Then it’s time to make your next move. Stop multiplying zeros because you’ll always end up with nothing. Make a move, goddamit! This is your life. Your only one. Make it count. Move now before it’s checkmate. Game over. You’re out. There will be no more chances to live the life you want when the mousetrap falls down forever.

But maybe the gamble seems too wild. Numbers on playing cards that you cannot see yet are too risky to take a chance on. You want to stick with the safe hand. The monthly golden handcuffs beckons with its siren call once again. Bills must be paid for after all. Happiness hides back in its dormant den. Today is not the day for a leap of faith (or is it?). Maybe tomorrow you’ll follow your instinct (no, today!). Yes, it can wait until tomorrow; today is not the day (yes, it is!). And so the wheel starts to spin again.
